I have sewer gas coming from sink drain?

I smell sewer gas in the sink drain.It looks as though the sink waste pipe has not been vented it just drains.could this be the reason.The trap has water in it and is leveled correctly.Its an older house so it has a ceramic sewer with no sewer trap and drains into a septic tank.Any suggestions?

If you have a trap filled with water it is impossible for gas to come up in the sink drain. Look at other reasons for the odor. Is there an open vent in the wall. Was there ever time when there were two waste lines someone didn’t cap off the other line?
If it’s not vented the trap would go dry. Look on the roof for a vent pipe above the sink,if there is 1 it may have a crack in it, inside the wall. Try poring a little bleach in the drain or some baking soda in it. Bleach will kill off bacteria soda will sweeten the smell.
You need a trap in it. The trap will hold a little water in it and that becomes a block to the gases but water will flow through. Sewer gas can come up if a trap become dry too.

If the P-trap is filled with water as you say, you shouldn’t be getting gas backing up the drain. It is possible that you just have gunk built up in the drain and pipe (happens more if you have a pop-up drain stopper) that is causing the smell. Try taking off the P-trap and drain and flushing them with a hose outside (I say do it out side because I’m betting it is filled with black stinky gunk like ours was).

That’s one of the jobs of the "S" trap under the sink. It’s suppose to trap sewer gas. Whether vented or not it’s still going to trap the gas unless there some sort of back pressure.

well, you may want to install some vents. find even if it isnt a big pvc pipe like they usualy use, i would think that any kind of tubing that is sutible for permanant instalation would help out the problem. if sewer gas is building up, the gas will simply bubble up through the trap. in the mean time, try pouring vegitible oil down the drain, it will not dry up like water.
