Is it the plumbers putty placed under the flange lip, or the flat rubber washer on the underside, that is tightened on with the locking nut?I just really need help with this I am not sure how to put this on so it doesn’t leak and I need to get this taken care of very quickly but I am not sure if I am doing everything right.
The seal is formed very similair to the flared tubing surface, and the putty, although it need not be putty, as any soft sealant like teflon paste will work. auto gasket sealant. Putty is used because it is food safe. The rubber gasket underneath is snugged up with the ring nut to form a less strained on mechanically locked position with moving water, and vibration acting on it to break the integrity of the seal.
the plumber’s putty.
both of these work.
The plumbers putty is used to fill any gaps that will form between the flange and the rubber washer on the underside. The putty is placed under the flange and when the underside retaining nut is tightened, the excess putty will squeeze out. To finish, remove the excess putty. The seal is complete and is formed by the combination of the rubber gasket and the putty.
